Walgreens Boots Alliance and VillageMD have announced plans to expand to San Antonio, Texas, with the opening of nine Village Medical primary care practices in Walgreens over the next year.

These openings represent an expansion into Texas’ fifth major market, after Houston, El Paso, Austin and Dallas. Through the Walgreens and Village® model of coordinated care, patients receive full-service primary care and pharmacy services that companies have called “convenient and cost-effective”.

The model is particularly suited to people with chronic diseases and aims to improve outcomes and reduce the cost of care.

The move represents an expansion into a new market for both organizations, allowing Walgreens and VillageMD to tap into an area they say lacks access to primary care.

To illustrate this market opportunity, companies have highlighted to research from the Texas Department of State Health Services, showing that chronic disease accounts for 75% of Texas health care spending. Yet according to American health ranking, Texas ranks 47th in the country for the number of primary care providers available to residents.

Walgreens and VillageMD see an opportunity in these numbers and present the coordinated care model as being more streamlined, leveraging the collective expertise of pharmacy teams and physicians.

Primary care doctors from Village Medical and pharmacists from Walgreens are working together, the companies said, to provide chronic disease care, preventative services and treatment of everyday illness and injury. During the same visit, patients have access to physician care while ensuring that their affordable prescriptions, drug refills and substitution options are readily available.

Village Medical at the San Antonio Walgreens sites is expected to create more than 850 full-time jobs in the area. Village Medical will employ 380 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals.

Walgreens Boots Alliance recently announced an increased investment in VillageMD to advance its strategic position in the delivery of value-based primary care. This investment will accelerate the opening of at least 600 Village Medical at Walgreens primary care practices in more than 30 U.S. markets by 2025 and 1,000 by 2027, with more than half of these practices in medically ill communities. served.

A year ago, Walgreens announced the opening of more than 500 Village MD primary care offices in stores. Walgreens has over 21,000 stores.

It competes with primary care providers and other large retail pharmacy chains, such as CVS, which has HealthHubs.

VillageMD partners with physicians to provide tools, technology, operations, personnel support and industry relationships. The Village Medical brand provides primary care to patients in traditional stand-alone clinics, Village Medical clinics at Walgreens, in-home and via virtual tours.

VillageMD said it was also among the largest participating sponsors of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ new direct contracting program.
