S&P Dow Jones and MSCI Indices Announce Consultation on Potential Changes to Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS®)

NEW YORK, October 18, 2021 / PRNewswire / – S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), a leading provider of financial market indices, and MSCI Inc. (MSCI), a leading provider of indices and analysis based on the research decided to consult with members of the investment community. on the potential changes to the structure of the GICS in 2022.

The review aims to ensure that the structure of the GICS reflects today’s markets and continues to be an accurate and comprehensive framework of the industry.

The consultation starts on October 18, 2021 and end on 20 December 2021. Any modification of the structure of the GICS will be announced by February 2022. This consultation may or may not lead to changes in the structure of the GICS.

The main highlights of this consultation are the potential changes to the classification of renewable energy companies and retailers under GICS. Additionally, the consultation covers potential changes to data processing and outsourced services, banking and savings and mortgage finance, REITs, transportation, and an updated GICS definition for cannabis.
