The State Bank of India and the Indian Navy on Monday launched SBI’s NAV-eCash card aboard the country’s largest naval aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya.

The card will avoid difficulties for onboard staff to handle physical cash when deploying the ship on the high seas, the bank said in a statement.

The infrastructure of warships precludes traditional payment solutions, especially when the ship is on the high seas where there is no connectivity.

The NAV-eCash card, with its dual-chip technology, will facilitate both online and offline transactions, the statement said.

The chief executive of the bank (retail and digital banking), CS Setty, said the concept will be replicated on other warships and various defense establishments to create a secure, convenient and sustainable payment ecosystem.
